3. Fit Child Safety Locks

A restrictor lock limits the window opening to just 10cm, enough for ventilation but not enough for a child to climb out. The lock is keyed, so an adult can still open the window fully for cleaning or in an emergency. This is particularly useful on aluminium sliding windows in bedrooms, where you want night-time airflow without leaving a full-width opening.

4. Casement Windows With Restrictors

An aluminium casement window with a restrictor hinge can be locked at a small opening. It can only be opened fully with a key. Casements open outwards, so a restrictor hinge also stops the sash swinging wide in a strong monsoon gust and slamming shut on small fingers.

5. Keep Furniture Away From Windows

Do not place beds, chairs, or shelves near windows, as children can use them to climb up. In compact condo bedrooms this can be difficult, so if the bed has to sit under the window, that is the window that needs a grille and a restrictor lock first.
